Preparing Your Yard for Mosquito Season

Mosquitoes are those tiny, annoying bugs that like to bite us and make us itchy. They love warm weather, so it’s important to get our yards ready before they show up. Here’s how you can help prepare your yard for mosquito season:

1. Get Rid of Standing Water

Mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs. If you see any puddles, like in old tires, buckets, or plant saucers, make sure to dump them out. Even small amounts of water can be a home for mosquito eggs!

2. Keep Your Yard Clean

Mosquitoes like to hide in tall grass and messy areas. Help by mowing the lawn and keeping your yard neat. Trim the bushes and rake up any leaves or sticks.

3. Check Your Gutters

Sometimes gutters get filled with leaves and sticks, causing water to sit there. Make sure your gutters are clean and water can flow easily through them. You might need a grown-up to help with this.

4. Use Mosquito-Repelling Plants

Some plants can help keep mosquitoes away. Citronella, lavender, and marigolds can scent your yard and repel mosquitoes. You can ask your parents to help you plant some of these in your garden.

5. Make Sure to Use Mosquito Spray

Sometimes, even after doing all these things, mosquitoes still show up. That’s when it’s good to use special mosquito sprays. These sprays help to keep mosquitoes away from your yard. You might need a grown-up to use these sprays for you.

Why is this Important?

Getting rid of mosquitoes helps us enjoy playing outside without getting itchy bites. Plus, it keeps us safe from mosquito diseases.

So, let’s get our yards ready and keep those pesky mosquitoes away! Remember, it’s always a good idea to ask an adult for help with some of these tasks.

Have fun and stay mosquito-free!
